Yield to Pull series
I am currently working on a series of installations that consider the first 5 developmental movements that humans make. Those movements are
YIELD – PUSH – REACH – GRASP – PULL
I am interested in exploring these five movements as they are expressed psychologically. These psychological expressions exist not only in our body movements and actions, but also in the spaces we create between us. The installations and drawings I am currently making explore these ideas through environment, light, object and movement.

REACH
Below, are two installations that consider the movement of REACHING.
The Reach Field Tree Project is an installation that was built in the summer of 2019 as part of a sculpture biennial at Park Hill Orchard in Easthampton MA. The installation consists of two tree branches placed on metal tripods. Articulated hands are embedded in the broken end of the branch. Red threads emerge from the hands and reach toward a tree. Each thread is tied into the body of the tree. This installation will be up for two years, and will be photographed through the seasons.
The installation is an exploration of reaching at a psychological level. After a powerful windstorm, I saw many downed branches. I was struck by my own sense of loss and connection to the trees as if they were members of my family. This piece is an attempt to engage in a reciprocal level of care with our planet. In creating an artwork that provokes a visceral, emotional response in the viewer, the goal is to awake the same call to engagement.

The Reach Field will consist of a pair of articulated life size hands placed on the floor facing one of the far corners of the space. From the fingers of the hands, red threads will emerge and stretch in a wide net toward the corner. On the walls of the corner, a projector that is hung above will project a series of slow motion images of reaching hands.
Since this installation is still very much in progress, I will upload drawings, links to video and photographs of the elements as the project grows.
YIELD
Below is an exploration of the action of yielding through movement.
This clip will be included in a longer video of all 5 movements

GRASP
Grasp Stones Project
In February of 2021, as the Covid 19 pandemic stretched into its 11th month, and the winter felt interminable, I decided to invite people to participate in this project. The goal was to offer participants a way to soothe themselves in these isolating and difficult times. I sent participants two lumps of clay and an instruction sheet so they could make their own grasp stones. Below is the instruction sheet and images of my grasp stones.

This exploration of GRASP consists of ceramic sculptures that are a visual inprint of a two handed grasp motion. Accompanying them are videos of the grasp action involved in making the imprints. The ceramic pieces will be shown on shelves on a white wall. The videos will be projected onto the same wall on a loop.
I plan to ask other people to imprint their own grasp actions into clay. Their actions will be filmed, and the pieces will be fired and glazed as well.
